A History Speaks presentation. An Upper Arlington America-250 celebration!
Join us as we honor the only marked grave of a Revolutionary War veteran in our community—Elijah Legg. By the early 1820s, Mr. Legg had moved his family to this area, and together with his neighbors, the Walcutts, they represent some of our community’s earliest pioneer families.
Wellington Upper School students will present their research into:
The history of the Walcutt-Legg cemetery land, located adjacent to the Wellington School's grounds
Elijah Legg, his family, and his neighbors–the Walcutts–along with their ties to military service
Biographies of other pioneers buried at the cemetery
General cemetery practices of the 1800s
Wellington Middle School students will present an overview of Wars and military honors in our cemetery with ties to America-250. Lower School students will display grave rubbings from the Walcutt-Legg cemetery.
The City of UA has partnered with the Upper Arlington Historical Society to create a new historical marker at the cemetery's site; the sign’s dedication ceremony will be held at the event.
Free to attend. No registration required.
Elijah Legg’s headstone reads: “Elijah Legg. Died Sept 24, 1852. In the 87th year of (life.)”
