what was happening here in 1924?

In 1924, Upper Arlington’s boundaries were roughly Northam Road to Fifth Avenue, North Star Road to Tremont / Riverside Drive. In this annexation-by-decade map designed by the City of Upper Arlington, all of the gray and orange areas were considered UA. No one had officially lived in UA more than 10 years, and the majority of land we know today as “UA” was Perry Township. Learn more about life in our community one hundred years ago. Thanks to First Community Church for publishing the local newspaper in 1924 and making a majority of this research possible!

Sales ads were critical to convincing potential buyers to live in this new concept of a “suburb.” This ad tells us 300 families are living in Upper Arlington as of February 1924, this after ten years of development work on the community. (Feb. 29, 1924)

Other ads promoted the latest in household appliances, including this efficient washing machine. (May 2, 1924)

Of course, new gadgets require new learning, as this article reminds folks to not run their cars with the garage door closed. (Jan 25, 1924)

Upper Arlington’s extensive and gently curving streets must have been tempting for drivers to see what their car could do. Just like today, the police were ready to nab speeders. (Oct. 3, 1924)

The announcement of the opening of Upper Arlington’s first permanent school building, known today as Jones Middle School. Originally grades 1-6 occupied the building. (Mar. 14, 1924). See more about the history of early schooling in UA.

The UA Golf Club was set on forty acres between Lower Chelsea Road, Dublin Road, Upper Chelsea Road, and the Miller Park drainage ditch. It was open from 1922 - mid-1930s. (May 23, 1924)

Upper Arlington hosted its second Fourth of July celebration. A spark from a torch accidentally set off two-thirds of the fireworks display prior to the arranged time, making for a much smaller event in the evening. (July 11, 1924)

The UA Civic League, a precursor to today’s Civic Association, was busy encouraging community spirit for the holidays. (Dec 12, 1924)

Adults used the schools as the location of community social events, with dancing being a main activity. (Dec 5, 1924)

Meanwhile, in southern Perry Township, north of UA’s 1924 border (roughly Northam Road) to today’s Henderson Road, these “farming families” had other concerns as hunting season approached. (Columbus Dispatch, Nov. 14, 1924)

GUIDE TO COMMON ARCHITECTURAL STYLES FOUND IN UA’S HISTORIC DISTRICT

Since Upper Arlington was originally founded in the southern part of our city, the majority of our century-old homes are found in our Historic District. The District is nationally recognized for its outstanding and numerous examples of Twentieth Century Revival architectural styles. Page through this excerpt from a 1992 publication of the Upper Arlington Historical Society to learn about the background and characteristics that comprise these distinctive house styles.
